mvp-comment-529-1 τὸ μέν τις 1

mvp-comment-529-2 σημαίνων 2

mvp-comment-529-3 Now comes this question:—Was the antithesis here between youth and age , or between some other notions? Hartung writes

οὔτ’ ἦρος οὔτε γήρᾳ
, understanding,
"neither in spring nor in winter ,"
σημαίνων
,
"by his word of command"
: but such a fig. sense of
γήρᾳ
is inconceivable. Nauck's
οὔτ’ ἦρος οὔτ’ ἐν ὥρᾳ | χειμώνων
is too far from the MSS., and the plur. is strange. I incline to believe that the poet indeed meant
"neither young nor old,"
but without any personal reference, and merely in this general sense:—
"from generation to generation of men these sacred trees are safe."
The words
ὁ γὰρ αἰὲν ὁρῶν
suit this. The conjecture συνναίων has palaeographic probability (for a cursive text): for the phrase cp. Eur. fr. 370
μετὰ δ’ ἡσυχίας πολιῷ γήραϊ συνοικοίην
.

702. mvp-comment-388-1 τὸ μέν τις οὔ, *νεαρὸς οὔτε γήρα This line seems to have been tampered with by some one who had an ear for the iambic rhythm. The simplest alteration is to omit te and place a comma after οὔ. Which no commander, young or old... For the order of τις οὔ, see Essay on Language § 41. p. 71, and for the omission of the first οὔτε, ib. § 39, p. 67, and Phil. 771, ἑκόντα μήτ᾽ ἄκοντα. For the variety of expression (veapὸς σημαίνων, γήρα σημαίνων), cp. Ant. 808, νέατον φέγγος λεύσσουσαν κούποτ' αὖθις: and for the dative γήρᾳ, which has given offence, Ο.Τ. 172, οὔτε τόκοισιν ἀνέχουσι γυναῖκες. μέν, assuredly. Cp. Sophocles, in his description, blends the olive of the region, whether that in the temple of Athena Polias in the Acropolis, which Xerxes could not destroy (Hdt. 8.55), or the olives of the Academy which according to Androtion, quoted by the Schol., Archidamus spared, with the olive generally.
