Allwaltend Haupt der Götter, Zeus,
allseh'nder Gott,
Ihm, dieses Land's Herrscher,
Verleih zur Siegeswonne Glück, den ruhmgekrönten Fang, zu thun,
1080
Und Hehre du, Pallas Athene !
Dich, den Waidmann, Phöbos, ruf' ich,
Dich, o Schwester, die so rasch die buntgefleckten,
Flüchtigen Hirsche verfolgt,
naht mit eurem Beistand,
1085

1089. mvp-comment-587-1 σθένει . . λόχον Το make triumphant their ambush by successfully taking the fair prey.' ἐπινίκειος for ἐπινίκιος for the sake of the metre. The dative is to be taken closely, as instrumental, with τελειώσαι.

1089. mvp-comment-587-2 ἐπινικείῳ σθένει is a periphrasis for νίκῃ. τὸν εὔαγρον is slightly proleptic (Essay on Language § 38. p 70), and contains an allusion to Antigone as the fair occasion of the expedition. λόχος is properly an ambush, but is here generalised to mean a foray, or skirmishing expedition.
