Chrysothemis.
Ich will dir Alles sagen, was ich selber weiß.
370
Sie wollen, wenn du deinen Klagen nicht entsagst,
Dorthin dich senden, wo du nie der Sonne Strahl
Mehr schau'n und lebend im gewölbten Felsengrab,
Fern diesem Lande, dein Geschick bejammern sollst.
Dies denn bedenkend, klage nicht hernach mich an

In deinem Unglück. Werde klug, noch ist es Zeit.

Chorus
If I am not a deranged prophet and one who lacks wise judgments,
Justice, the sender of the omen, will come, winning the just victory of her hands’ might. She will come in pursuit before long, my child. Courage is mine,
475
since I heard just now of this sweet-blowing dream. Never does the lord of the Hellenes, your producer forget,
480
nor does the axe of long ago forget, striking with bronze on its jaws, which in most shameless disgrace annihilated him.
485
Chorus
She, too, will come, she of many hands and many feet who lurks in her terrible ambush,
the bronze-shod Erinys. For an unwed, unbetrothed passion for a marriage polluted by murder seized the pair, though divine law forbade it to them.
490
Therefore I am confident that the portent—a wonder which I will never blame—will draw near to the criminals and conspirators. To be sure, mortal prophecy
495
from fearful dreams or divine signs exists no more, if this vision of the night does not find due fulfillment.
500
Chorus
O chariot-race of Pelops long ago, source of many a sorrow,
what disaster you have brought upon this land! For ever since Myrtilus sank to rest beneath the waves,
505
hurled to utter destruction from his golden chariot in disgraceful outrage, from that time to this, outrage and its many sorrows
510
were never yet gone from this house.

Remark the resemblance to the passage where Antigone—summing up her position—compares the
moral pain of neglecting her duty with those penalties which she contemns:—

One of the scholia recognises the traditional reading, and explains it correctly: —

363-364. mvp-comment-153-1 ἐμοὶ γὰρ . . βόσκημα] (1) ‘For I would have such maintenance alone as will not cause me pain:' i. e. through compliance with my father's enemies. The reading λυποῦν is implied in the first scholion here, which, although giving a wrong explanation, deserves for this reason to be transcribed:-ἐμοί, φησίν, ἔστω τροφή, ἡ τῇ ἀνάγκῃ μόνον ἁρμόζουσα, καὶ τὴν πείνην ἀπελαύνουσα· οὐ δέομαι γὰρ τοιαύτης τροφῆς ἀφ᾿ ἧς ἡδονὴν σχήσω. (2) The MS. reading, which is also acknowledged in the scholia, -τοὐμὲ μὴ λυπεῖν (Schol. τοῦτο μόνον ἐμὲ βοσκέτω, τὸ μὴ λυπεῖν ἐμὲ αὐτήν, εἰ τοῖς φονεῦσι τοῦ πατρὸς πείθεσθαι ἀναγκασθήσομαι) is possibly right, but the use of ἐμέ for ἐμαυτήν is hardly justified, and the expression seems forced. Ср., however, Eur. Cycl.
