OED
Enter TIRESIAS . 300
O thou whose universal thought commands
300
All knowledge and all mysteries, in Heaven
And on the earth beneath, thy mind perceives,
Tirésias, though thine outward eye be dark,
What plague is wasting Thebè, who in thee,
Great Sir, finds her one saviour, her sole guide.
305
Phoebus (albeit the messengers perchance
Have told thee this) upon our sending sent
This answer back, that no release might come
From this disaster, till we sought and found
And slew the murderers of king Laius,
310
Or drave them exiles from our land. Thou, then,
Withhold not any word of augury
Or other divination which thou knowest,
But rescue Thebè, and thyself, and me,
And purge the stain that issues from the dead.
315
On thee we lean: and ’tis a noble thing
To use what power one hath in doing good.

So weckt mich eure Stimme nicht vom Schlummer auf;
65
Nein, wisset, manche Thräne hab' ich schon geweint,
Bin manchen Pfad der Sorge schon umhergeirrt;
(Jünglinge treten an ihn heran.)

Oedipus
354
Nor will I be silent.
1 tell thee once for all thou wert thyself
Accomplice in thi.s deed. Nay, more, 1 think,
But for thy blindness, wouldst with thy own hand
355
Have done it too.

TIR. 354
Thou vilest of the vile---for thou wou'dst raise
Th' insensate rock to rage---wilt thou not speak,
But show thyself unfeeling and unmoved?

48. mvp-comment-38-1 τῆς πάρος προθυμίας For your former zeal. προμηθίας is a various reading. The two words are often confused in MSS, and προμηθίας has been thought to agree better with 11.47 and 51. But προθυμίας, implying no doubt of Oedipus' power to save the people if he will, is really preferable.
