200

Um Telamons Haus in der Ferne besorgt;

Denn Ajas, der Held, groß, riesiger Kraft,

Liegt niedergebeugt

205

So bitter gewandt?

Strophe.

Der Chor.

Teucer

I too have beheld

A man with folly swollen reproach his friends

Oppressed with sore calamity, when straight

One came like me, with indignation fired.

Saw, and addressed him thus : " Cease, shameless wretch !

Nor thus oppress the dead ; for if thou dost,

Remember, thou shalt suffer for thy crime."

Thus spoke he to the weak insulting fool ;

Methinks I see him here — it must be he,

Even Menelaus. Have I guessed aright ?

English (Robert Potter, 1788) (OCR draft) Experimental (English (Robert Potter, 1788)) — 205 focus

Teucer

Go then with speed,

992

And bring him hither, lest some daring hand

With hostile force should seize him, like the whelp

Of a lone lioness. Go, spare no toil :

All will insult the dead, when low they lie.

Enter Tecmessa.

Tecmessa

Mates of the ship of Ajax, offspring of the race that springs from the Erechtheids, the soil’s sons, cries of grief are the portion of us who care from afar for the house of Telamon.

Ajax, our terrible, mighty lord of untamed power, now lies plagued by a turbid storm of disease.
205

Chorus

And what is the heavy change from the fortune of yesterday which this night has produced?

Daughter of Teleutas the Phrygian, speak, since for you his spear-won mate bold Ajax maintains his love, so that with some knowledge you could suggest an explanation.
