ATH
Then, warned by what thou seest, be thou not rash
To vaunt high words toward Heaven, nor swell thy port
Too proudly, if in puissance of thy hand
Thou passest others, or in mines of wealth.

Since Time abases and uplifts again
All that is human, and the modest heart
Is loved by Heaven, who hates the intemperate will.

Ich weiß, Odysseus, und ich ging dir lange schon,

Chorus
263
Now then, ray friends (for so the time
260
demands),
260
Each o'er his head should cast the mournful veil,
260
And instant fly, or to our ships repair,
260
And sail with speed ; for dreadful are the threats
Of the Atridse ; death may be our lot,
And we shall meet an equal punishment
With him whom we lament, our frantic lord.

Chorus
221
What hast thou said of one, that in the works
Of war flamed foremost! We can neither bear
The infamy, nor shun it. By the Chiefs
Already it is whisper'd, and anon
Wide through the Grecian camp it will be spread.
Ah me! I fear th' advancing ills; the man
By the same hand, by frenzy arm'd, will die,
Amidst the darkness of the night which whirl'd
His sword, and with the herdsmen slew the herds.

55. mvp-comment-45-1 ἔκειρε is imperfect. The syllable κειρ is echoed in πολύκερων. The cognate accusative and hypallage together cannot be literally rendered in English. 'He made bloody havoc with the horned multitude, felling them on all sides of him.'
