Semejante ley no ha sido decretada por el excelso Jove, ni por la Justicia, compañera de los dioses manes: ellos jamás impusieron leyes tales á los hombres, y yo no pude creer nunca que tus pregones tuvieran fuerza superior á la de las leyes no escritas, pero infalibles y eternas de los dioses. Eternas, porque las leyes divinas no son de hoy ni de ayer, sino de siempre y de todos los tiempos, ni hay nadie en el mundo que sepa cuando comenzaron á regir. Yo no debía, pues, por temor á las amenazas de un mortal, exponerme á la venganza de los dioses 1 . Antes de tu decreto, sabía que estaba condenada á la ley del morir (¡destino á todos inevitable!) Si muero antes de tiempo, será una dicha para mí: ¿qué cosa hay entre tan grandes males como afligen mi vida que no me haga mirar la muerte como un bien? Por lo tanto, la suerte que me espera no me causa ningún dolor; pero ¡ah! lo sentiría vivo y profundo si hubiera dejado sin sepultura al hijo de mi madre; lo demás nada me importa. Si tú calificas de locura mi conducta, me consideraré juzgada de insensata por un insensato.

mvp-comment-338-1 This verse clearly belongs to the Chorus, to whom L assigns it. The first words of the next verse show this. Hermann objected that in similar situations the Chorus usually has two verses. It is true that this is usually the case. But O. T. 1312 is enough to show that there was no rigid rule; why, indeed, should there be? And, here, surely,

πλέον ἥμισυ παντός.
