Ah me ! What deadly woes from the bad mind
Perpetual flow. Thus in one wretched house
Have you beheld the slayer and the slain !
O fatal counsels ! O unhappy son !
Thus with thy youthful bride to sink in death ;
Thou diest, my child, and I alone have killed thee !

Chorus
Lo, yonder the king himself draws near, bearing that which tells too clear a tale,—the work of no 1260 stranger’s madness,—if we may say it,—-but of his own misdecds. 1

1336. mvp-comment-739-1 The middle voice of ἐράω is known to exist (L. and S. s. v.), and may have been used by Sophocles with a pathetic force. Essay on Language § 31. p. 52. This seems more probable than retaining μέν from the later MSS, which has no force, or reading τοιαῦτα or γ' ἅπαντα for ταῦτα. ἐρῶμεν, plur. for sing., can hardly stand with the singular following in the same line.
