CREONTE

CR
I am resolved; and so, ’twould seem, are you.
In with her, slaves! No more delay! Henceforth
These maids must have but woman’s liberty
And be mewed up; for even the bold will fly
580
When they see Death nearing the house of life.
German (J. J. C. Donner, 1875; OCR review) (OCR draft) Experimental (German (J. J. C. Donner, 1875; OCR review)) — 134 focus
135
In wuthathmendem Drang,
Wild herschnob mit feindlichem Sturm.
Doch es ging anders aus;

Creon
631
He comes, and better than a prophet, soon
Shall we divine his inmost thoughts. My son,
Com'st thou, well knowing our decree, to mourn
Thy promised bride, and angry to dispute

HAEMON
Vater, dein bin ich. Milde Denkart hast du,
660
Richtest mir recht.

Creon
Determined, yes, for thee and for me— to the two attendants. No more delay—servants, take them within! Henceforth they must be women, and not range 580 at large; for verily even the bold seek to fly, when they see Death now closing on their life. Exeunt attendants, guarding ANTIGONE and ISMENE.—CREON remains.

Chorus
834
She was divine, and sprung from race divine;
But we are mortal, and of mortals born.
835
For thee how glorious then to share like fate
With those of heav'nly race, and as the gods
Revered, like them to live, like them to die!

134. mvp-comment-81-1 ἀντιτύπᾳ This conj. of Porson has been generally received. He fell upon the earth, that smote him again; i.e. He fell with a shock. The Scholia explain ἀντίτυπα, which is against metre.

134. mvp-comment-81-2 τανταλωθείς Swung. As if the scale that had been the lightest had suddenly become the heaviest. Cp. Hom.
