Eros, Allsieger im Kampf!

Du, der bestürmt, wen er bezwungen,
Der Nachts auf schlummernder Jungfrau'n
Zartblühenden Wangen webet:
Hin über's Meer schweisst du, besuchst
Hirtliche Wohnstätten;

Und kein ewiger Gott kann dir entrinnen,
Kein sterblicher Mensch, des Tages Sohn;
Und ergriffen rast er.

773. mvp-comment-451-1 ἔρημος.. στίβος Where track of human footstep there is none. The privative ἔρημος is used for the negative by a redundancy like those adduced in Essay on Language § 40. p. 75; and ἔρημος = ἄστειπτος (Phil. 2), so that the expression = Where no track of mortals has been trodden.
