Sophocles Antigone 2

ed. August Boeckh

ISMENE

ISMENE
No word of those we love, Antigone,
Painful or glad, hath reached me, since we two
Were utterly deprived of our two brothers,
Cut off with mutual stroke, both in one day.
And since the Argive host this now-past night
15
Is vanished, I know nought beside to make me
Nearer to happiness or more in woe.

Ismene, traute Schwester, vielgeliebtes Haupt, 1
1
5

I might impart them to thee.

Die beyden Brüder beyde wir verloren;
Die starben, Einen Tag, von zweyen Händen;
15

Ismene
No word of friends, Antigone, gladsome or painful, hath come to me, since we two sisters were bereft of brothers twain, killed in one day by a twofold blow; and since in this last night the Argive host hath fled, I know no more, whether my fortune be brighter, or more grievous.

Antigone
1cont2
I know it well, and call'd thee forth before
1
The palace gates, that thou may'st hear alone.
What is it? Dark and troubled seem thy thoughts.
Know then that of our brothers Creon deigns
One with a tomb to grace, and casts one forth
Unhonour'd. With all just and solemn rites
Eteocles, they say, beneath the earth
He places, honour'd by the dead below.
But his harsh edict is proclaim'd, that none
Entomb, that none bewail the wretched corse
Of Polynices, doom'd by him to lie
Unwept, unburied, with his flesh to gorge
The ravening birds, whose keen eye marks their prey.
This the good Creon hath, they say, to thee
And me (for I must name myself) enjoin'd;
And hither comes his mandate to proclaim
39cont2
To those who know it not; no trivial charge,
Nor to be slighted; for whoe'er performs.
69cont2
Aught of these offices, is doom'd to die.
Such is our state; which calls on thee to show
Thy high-born spirit, or degenerate mind.
What, wretched sister, what can I avail,
Opposing, or obeying his command?
Wilt thou assist me? Wilt thou share my toils?
Resolve.
What deed of danger to attempt ?

1-17. mvp-comment-1-1 The opening speeches reveal the contrast between the sisters, while the affectionate address of Antigone in l. 1 gives greater emphasis to her violent outbreak in l. 69. Cp. О. Т. 85, and note.

φίλων Νo word concerning any of our friends. Essay on Language § 9. p. 13.

12. mvp-comment-11-1 ἐξ ὅτου Sophocles has not been careful to mark the exact sequence of the events preceding the action of the Play. (See Introduction.) But the death of the brothers is supposed to have taken place some little time before the rout of the Argive host. Infr. 144-148.

17. mvp-comment-13-1 μᾶλλον is redundant, the whole expression being epexegetic of οὐδὲν ὑπέρτερον, and in construction with οἶδα.
