Entweder harre seiner dort der Tage Ziel,
So hieß es, oder wenn er sieg' in diesem Kampf,

Verfließ' in lautern Wonnen ihm des Lebens Rest.

Chorus
497
She speaks most kindly to thee. Be persuaded.
Hereafter thou shalt find her not ungrateful ;
We too will thank thee.
Lie. O my dearest mistress !
Not vinexperienced thou in human life,
Nor ignorant. And therefore naught from thee
Will I conceal, but tell thee all the truth :
'Tis as he said, and Hercules indeed
Doth love lole. For her sake alone
QCchalia, her unhappy country, fell ;
This — for 'tis fit I tell thee — he confessed,
Nor willed me to conceal it. But I feared
'Twould pierce thy heart to hear th' unwelcome tale,
And therefore own I would have kept it from thee 3
That crime, if such it was, 1 have committed.
But since thou knowst it all, let me entreat thee,
For her sake and thy own, oh ! do not hate
This wretched captive, but remember well,
What thou hast promised faithfully perform.
He, whose victorious arm hath conquered all,
Now yields to her, and is a slave to love.

Commentary

Commentary (Lewis Campbell, 1879) (OCR draft) (Commentary (Lewis Campbell, 1879)) focus

67-78. mvp-comment-61-1 Hyllus has only just heard the rumour which he repeats; and Deianira is prompted by his mention of the new enterprise to communicate to him the special anxiety, over which she has hitherto brooded in solitude. The objection of Dobree, that she ought to have done so before, is like that made against the ignorance of Jocasta in the Oedipus Tyrannus. If such improbabilities in things external to the immediate action are not to be allowed, the composition of any drama becomes impossible.

77. mvp-comment-69-1 τῆσδε τῆς χώρας πέρι] As Wunder observes, Oechalia was not mentioned in the oracle, but Deianira infers, from the coincidence of time, that the prophecy referred to what Heracles was doing now. Dobr. conj. πείρας, Dronke, ὥρας, Hense, χρείας.
