Wie du betrübt in thränenreiche Klagen dich

Doch heute, wenn's der Sklavin schlichtem Sinn geziemt,

33. mvp-comment-31-1 προσεῖδε] The thing compared is expressed in terms of the comparison ( Essay on L. § 35. p 60; ср. §42. p. 79 ). Cp Shak. As You Like It : -'Adversity, Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, | Still wears a precious jewel in his head.' Hence the meaning of ἐξαμῶν is not to be pressed. Heracles after begetting his children only saw them for a moment when they were grown.
