Notes on the current edition

Ἀποφθέγματα Λακωνικά

1. ὡς] omitted in most mss.
2. διερχόμενον and ἰδόντα F.C.B. from the Life of Lycurgus, chap. viii. (which has ὁρῶντα): διέρχομενος and ἰδὼν (or μειδιάσαντα might be changed to μειδιάσας).
3. κτήσασθαι] κεκτῆσθαι in Life of Lycurgus, chap. ix.
4. ἢ] Kronenberg would omit.
5. πωμάτων the better spelling: πομάτων.
6. Ἀγεσιλάου or Ἀγεσιλάῳ but usually κατασκευάσαντος; presumably they should agree as in the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xiii.
7. Ἀγεσιλάου or Ἀγεσιλάῳ but usually κατασκευάσαντος; presumably they should agree as in the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xiii.
8. μηδὲ to accord with other quotations of the passage: μήτε.
9. ποιῶνται] ποιεῖται in some mss.
10. ζητοῦντα] Xylander would add τὴν αἰτίαν.
11. αὐταῖς] αὑτοῖς Kronenberg from the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xv.
12. Γεραδάτα, Γεραδάτας] Γεράδα, Γεράδας in the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xv.
13. ταῦρον ἐκτίνει μέγαν ... τηλικοῦτος; γελάσας Xylander from the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xv.: the mss. have only ταὐτὸν ἔφη ὁ Γεραδάτας.
14. Γεραδάτα, Γεραδάτας] Γεράδα, Γεράδας in the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xv.
15. βλάπτωμεν E. Kurtz: βλάπτοιμεν.
16. μένητε Life of Lycurgus, chap. xix.: ἦτε.
17. μείζων from μέσδων ( sic!) Life of Lycurgus, chap. xix.: μεῖζον.
18. ἐρᾶτε εἶναι F.C.B. from the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xix.; with the omission of one syllable - ατ- gives almost exactly the queer ms. reading ἐρεείνῃ (or ἐρεένει): ἐρέῃ εἶναι Sintenis.
19. οὔτε γενναῖον supplied by the editors from the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xxii.
20. εἶναι F.C.B. to fit the construction: ἦν Life of Lycurgus, chap. xxii., from which the sentence εἶναι δ’ ... μεγαλόψυχον is added here by most editors. But the whole paragraph looks like a memorandum.
21. εἶναι F.C.B. to fit the construction: ἦν Life of Lycurgus, chap. xxii., from which the sentence εἶναι δ’ ... μεγαλόψυχον is added here by most editors. But the whole paragraph looks like a memorandum.
22. ἡγήσεσθαι] ἡγήσασθαι most mss., perhaps rightly.
