Wie wirst du mit trozigem Muth 1
Gegen die Söhne dir
Hand und Herz bewaffnen,
Zum gråßlichen Morde schreitend?

Wie magst du die Kinder ansehn,
Und hemmen die Thran', und nicht
Ablassen vom Mord? Du kannst nicht, 2
Wenn flehend vor dir die Knaben
Hinsinken, das Blutige

Gleichmuthig vollenden!

Notes on the current edition

Medea

1. Of the numerous emendations of this corrupt passage, Nauck’s τέκνυν for τέκνοις is the simplest, if it goes far enough. Verrall suggests that a word has fallen out after the second ἢ and conjectures μένος of τέχναν. This is not less satisfactory than most of the emendations.
