Lives of Eminent Philosophers

1. The change of φωνῆς φωνήν to σωφροσύνης σωφροσύνην is due to Cobet. Cf. § 130 ὥρα ἄνθος ἀρετῆς, and § 173. For virtue in general Cobet’s change here substitutes the particular virtue required. Von Arnim, adhering more closely to the mss., would replace φωνῆς by ῥώμης and retain φωνήν, which would give the meaning, Beauty he called the flower of strength, while according to others it was the voice which he called the flower of beauty.
