Gleich nach dem Vorfall von Platää ließen die Lakedämo
nier an die Städte im Peloponnes und ihre auswärtigen
Bundesgenossen den Befehl ergehen, ihre Truppen marschbereit
zu machen und mit dem Bedarf für einen Feldzug außer Landes
zu versehen, um nach Attika einzufallen. Als alle damit zur
bestimmten Zeit fertig waren, vereinigten sich die sämtlichen
Streitkräfte, aus jeder Stadt zwei Drittel der vorhandenen
Mannschaft, auf dem Isthmus. Als das ganze Heer hier bei
sammen war, berief der lakedämonische König Archidamos, der
in diesem Feldzuge den Oberbefehl führte, die Feldhauptleute
aller Städte sowie die höheren Beamten und sonst angesehenen
Personen zu einer Versammlung und redete sie also an:

περιήγγελλον —often takes the construction of κελεύω but with the dat., which κελεύω never has.

τά τε ἐπιτήδεια —sc. παρασκευάζεσθαι. οἷα εἰκὸς — quae deceret.

ὡς ἐσβαλοῦντες —because Athens was exposed to attack from the Isthmus. The corresponding Athenian incursion was merely into the Megarid; but Athens was unable to strike at Sparta herself directly. For the system adopted in consequence, see Intr. p. LXIX.

ἑτοῖμα —not with ἐπιτήδεια, but as in c. 3, 4, 98, 1.

γίγνοιτο —iterative; hence ξυνῇσαν imperf.

τὰ δύο μέρη — the denominator exceeding the numerator by 1 is invariably omitted. Contrast τῶν πέντε τὰς δύο μοίρας I. 10. τὰ δ. μέρη is in limiting apposition to the subject of ξυνῇσαν. Cf. c. 47, 2.

τοὺς . . ἀξιολογωτάτους —an indefinite expression, suited to the different circumstances and arrangements of the various contingents.

ἀξιολογωτάτους —forming one group with τοὺς ἐν τἐλει, but not identical with them. Cf. I. 10 τὰς μεγίστας καὶ ἐλαχίστας.
