LXXXV. Telles furent les fureurs dont les Corcyréens donnèrent les premiers l’exemple, dans leurs dissensions réciproques. Eurymédon et les Athéniens partirent avec leur flotte. Plus tard les Corcyréens fu- gitifs, qui avaient échappé au nombre de cinq cents, s’emparèrent de forts situés sur le continent et se rendirent maîtres de la côte, en face de leur patrie. Partant de là pour aller piller les habitants de l’ile, ils leur firent beaucoup de mal et réduisirent la ville à une grande disette. Ils envoyèrent aussi des députés à Lacédémone et à Corinthe pour solliciter leur rentrée : mais, comme ces démarches restaient sans résultat, ils se procurèrent, quelque temps après, des vaisseaux de transport et des troupes auxiliaires et passèrent dans l’ile au nombre de six cents. Là ils brûlèrent leurs vaisseaux, afin de n’avoir plus d’autre espérance que celle de s’emparer du pays ; ils s’établirent sur le mont Istone¹, où ils bâtirent une forteresse, et de là harcelèrent ceux de la ville et se rendirent maîtres de ia campagne.

Hier also zum erstenmal wüteten die Kerkyräer in der
Stadt mit solcher Leidenschaft gegeneinander; Eurymedon und
seine Athener aber fuhren mit ihren Schiffen wieder ab.
Später bemächtigten sich die kerkyräischen Flüchtlinge, deren
gegen fünfhundert entkommen waren, einiger fester Plätze auf
dem Festlande und damit der Herrschaft über das dortige
städtische Gebiet, unternahmen von da Raubzüge nach der
Insel und taten den Einwohnern vielen Schaden, so daß in
der Stadt große Hungersnot entstand. Sie schickten auch nach
Lakedämon und Korinth und baten, sie nach Kerkyra zurückzu
führen. Als sie damit keinen Erfolg hatten, versahen sie sich
bald nachher selbst mit Schiffen und Soldaten und setzten
damit, im ganzen etwa sechshundert Mann, nach der Insel

Die Absicht Spartas bei Aussendung meines Heeres ist keine andere, als den Zweck unseres Krieges mit Athen, als welchen wir in der Kriegserklärung die Befreiung Griechenlands angekündigt, zur Wirklichkeit zu machen. ταῖς πρώταις foreshadows the further disturbances, described in book IV., which occurred when Eurymedon returned.

διεσώθησαν —aor. as plup., a common idiom in parenthesis.

τείχη —built by Corcyra to protect its territory on the mainland against the neighbouring tribes, Chaones and Thesprotians.

ἐλήζοντο —viz. the fertile central part of the island, ἐξειργασμένη παγκάλως καὶ πεφυτευμένη χώρα, as Xenophon calls it ( Hell. VI 2, 6).

ὕστερον χρόνῳ —always of a considerable interval. It is most probable that the crossing occurred in the spring of 426 B.C.

τὴν Ἰστώνην —in IV. 46 we have ἐν τῷ ὄρει τῆς Ἰστώνης. It has been made highly probable (by B. Schmidt) that Istone is the whole mountain- range in the NE. of Corcyra. It is possible that the name belonged also to a particular height in the range.
