Cependant les Athéniens étaient déjà rassemblés a Corcyre avec tous leurs alliés. Le premier soin des généraui fut de passer la revue de l’armée pour régler l’ordre des mouillages et des campements. Ils formèrent trois divisions, qu’ils se partagèrent au sort. Naviguer de conserve les-eût exposés à manquer d’eau, d’espace et de vivres dans les endroits de relâche; d’ailleurs l’ordre et la discipline de l’armée ne pouvaient que gagner à ce que chaque division eût son chef distinct. Après cela, ils envoyèrent en Italie et en Sicile trois vaisseaux, qui devaient s’enquérir des villes disposées à les recevoir, et revenir à la rencontre de la flotte avec les informations dont -elle avait Besoin.

[1] The Athenians were now all in Corcyra, both they and their confederates. And first the generals took a view of the whole army and put them into the order wherein they were to anchor and make their naval camp; and having divided them into three squadrons, to each squadron they assigned a captain by lot, to the end that being at sea they might not come into want of water or harbours or any other necessaries where they chanced to stay; and that they might otherwise be the more easy to be governed when every squadron had his proper commander.

[2] After this they sent before them three galleys into Italy and Sicily to bring them word what cities in those parts would receive them, whom they appointed to come back and meet them that they might know whether they might be received or not before they put in.

ἐπεξέτασιν —‘a final muster’ of all the contingents.

ὁρμιεῖσθαί τε καὶ στρατ —See crit. note. The two tenses recur with μέλλω in c. 99, 2 ἔμελλον ἄξειν καὶ . . γίγνεσθαι: but there the infins. are separated, and γίγνομαι is in its nature inceptive, and can appropriately be combined with a fut. infin. In Demosth. 21, 55, quoted by Stahl, we have ὅ τε μέλλων νικᾶν καὶ ὁ πάντων ὕστατος ὁρμιεῖσθαι: but again the infins. are much more distinct than here. Hence, unless it be possible to draw a distinction between μέλλω with pres. and fut., it is best to read στρατοπεδεύσεσθαι.

τρία μέρη —internal accus., ‘into three parts.’

ἐν ταῖς καταγωγαῖς —‘whenever they landed.’

προαπαντᾶν —before the main body put into any port.
