Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War 1.61

[1] The news of the revolt of these cities was likewise quickly brought to the Athenian people, who, hearing withal of the forces sent unto them under Aristeus, sent forth against the places revolted two thousand men of arms and forty galleys under the conduct of Callias, the son of Calliades.

[2] These, coming first into Macedonia, found there the former thousand, who by this time had taken Therme and were now besieging the city of Pydna;

[3] and staying, helped for a while to besiege it with the rest. But shortly after they took composition and, having made a necessary league with Perdiccas (urged thereto by the affairs of Potidaea, and the arrival there of Aristeus), departed from Macedonia.

[4] Thence coming to Berrhoea, they attempted to take it; but when they could not do it, they turned back and marched towards Potidaea by land. They were of their own number three thousand men of arms, besides many of their confederates, and of Macedonians that had served with Philip and Pausanias, six hundred horsemen.

[5] And their galleys, seventy in number, sailing by them along the coast, by moderate journeys came in three days to Gigonus and there encamped.

[1] The Athenians also immediately received the news of the revolt of the cities. On being informed that Aristeus and his reinforcements were on their way, they sent two thousand heavy infantry of their own citizens and forty ships against the places in revolt, under the command of Callias, son of Calliades, and four colleagues.

[2] They arrived in Macedonia first, and found the force of a thousand men that had been first sent out, just become masters of Therme and besieging Pydna .

[3] Accordingly they also joined in the investment, and besieged Pydna for a while. Subsequently they came to terms and concluded a forced alliance with Perdiccas, hastened by the calls of Potidaea , and by the arrival of Aristeus at that place. They withdrew from Macedonia ,

[4] going to Beroea and thence to Strepsa, and, after a futile attempt on the latter place, they pursued by land their march to Potidaea with three thousand heavy infantry of their own citizens, besides a number of their allies, and six hundred Macedonian horsemen, the followers of Philip and Pausanias. With these sailed seventy ships along the coast.

[5] Advancing by short marches, on the third day they arrived at Gigonus, where they encamped.

Reitern unter Philippos und Pausanias zu Lande gegen Poti ^{1 2}

[1] The news of the revolt of the cities quickly reached the Athenians also; and when they learned that troops under Aristeus were also on the way to support the rebels, they sent against the places in revolt two thousand of their own hoplites and forty ships, under Callias son of Calliades with four other generals.

[2] These first came to Macedonia and found that the former thousand had just taken Therme and were besieging Pydna;

[3] so they also took part in the siege of Pydna. But afterwards they concluded an agreement and an alliance with Perdiccas, being forced thereto by the situation of Potidaea and tie arrival of Aristeus, which compelled them to hasten, and then they withdrew from Macedonia.

[4] On their way they came to Beroea and thence to Strepsa, ¹ and after an unsuccessful attempt upon this place proceeded overland to Potidaea with three thousand hoplites of their own and with many of their allies besides, and with six hundred Macedonian cavalry, who were under the command of Philip and Pausanias; and at the same time their ships, seventy in number, sailed along the coast.

[5] And marching leisurely they arrived on the third day at Gigonus, and went into camp.

[1] To the Athenians too came immediately the tidings of the cities having revolted; and when they found that the forces with Aristeus had gone there besides, they sent two thousand heavy-armed of their own men and forty slips to the revolted towns, with Callias, the son of Calliades, as general with four others;

[2] who, on arriving in Macedonia first, found that the former thousand had just taken Therme, and were besieging Pydna.

[3] So they also sat down before Pydna, and besieged it; but afterwards, having made terms and a compulsory alliance ¹ with Perdiccas, as they were hurried on by Potidaea and the arrival of Aristeus there, they withdrew from Macedonia;

[4] and having gone to Beroea, and thence turned again [to the coast], (after first attempting the place without taking it,) they continued their march by land to Potidaea, with three thousand heavy-armed of their own, and many of the allies besides, and six hundred horse of the Macedonians with Philip and Pausanias. At the same time seventy ships were sailing in a line with them.

[5] And advancing by short marches, they arrived at Gigonus, and pitched their camp.

[4] et Berrhoeam profecti et inde reversi, eoque oppido prius tentato, nec expugnato, itinere pedestri Potidaeam versus ibant, cum tribus millibus militum gravis armaturae ex suis, praeterea vero cum multis sociis, et sexcentis Macedonum equitibus, qui cum Philippo Pausa· niaque erant, eimul etiam naves septuaginta oram legebant;

[5] lente vero procedentes tertio die Gigonum pervenerunt, ibique castra posuerunt.
